Be at the helm of a real sailing boat
AS FOR BOLIDE this game gives a unique possibility of movement.
Yet again no card or dice control the hulls’ movement: actually, an original moving rule gives to the skippers the total control of the boat through its position as regards to the wind

LEARNING TO APPLY THIS MECHANISM
is like learning to sail, having the chance to experience an amazing and exhaustive simulation level during the upwind and downwind courses you will sail.

AS IN THE REAL WORLD, ALL THE PLAYERS WILL HAVE TO work out the best paths trying to catch the wind on the right side of the regatta field with continuous gybings and tackings. In the meantime, they must duel with the opponents, blanket their wind or overlapping and forcing them to penalties.

HOW TO PLAY

THE RACE COURSE EXTENDS ON THE LONGEST SIDE OF THE BOARD, between the downwind gate, bounded by the mark and the Committee boat, and the upwind buoy. The length of the course can be changed at windrose.jpgwill by the competitors.

AT THE BEGINNING THE WIND BLOWS FROM THE UPWIND BUOY (NORTH)
towards the downwind gate (South).

THE GAME BEGINS WITH THE EXCITING STARTING PROCEDURE:
as for real the boats enter the downwind gate, between the mark and the Committee boat, and start to duel for 7 turns.

THE PLAYERS HAVE PREVIOUSLY
placed on the battlefield:
  • the yellow tokens (wind falls causing a boat skip one turn) and
  • the blue tokens (gusts of wind providing with an extra-movement)
Therefore the strategy the players will reach during the starting procedure is to identify the best paths or sailing points among these tokens, just related to these wind characteristics.

FURTHERMORE IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT DURING THE STARTING PROCEDURE TO GAIN A PREDOMINANT POSITION
regards to the opponents, that is an advantageous position from the overlaps rules (the ones establishing the priority rights according to the starboard tacks, or to the leeward, or finally to the speed) point of view.

How do the boats move?

Boats sail along the board’s intersections, with the sailing points depending on the angle the boat forms with the wind direction.
  • A movement is a single move forward from one intersection to the next (also diagonally).
  • A manoeuvre is a rotation on oneself (clockwise or anticlockwise), from a minimum of 45° to a maximum of 90°.
EACH BOAT IS MOVED DEPENDING ON THE DIRECTION IT HAS IN REGARDS WITH THE WIND, which initially always blows from North• If this direction is Bowline (45° compared to the wind) the boat is entitled to 1 movement, advancing by one intersection on the
same Bowline, or to one manoeuvre.
• If the direction is Beam reach (90° compared to the wind) the boat is entitled to alternate 1 movement to 1 manoeuvre or to
make 2 movements or 2 manoeuvres.
• If the direction is Broad reach (45° downwind compared to the wind) the boat must move and then eventually manoeuvre.
• If the direction is Downwind (wind blowing from behind the boat) the boat can move or manoeuvre.
• If the direction is against the wind the boat can just manoeuvre.

Attention! The wind changes

THESE CHARACTERISTICS ARE SO REALISTIC AND EXCITING
but they can be upset by the two wind direction changes per each upwind or downwind leg: once the leader reaches the coordinate of one of the two flags the die is rolled and the wind direction changes consequently, upsetting the situation and making unpredictable the rest of the race.

TACTICS

ONE OF THE SECRETS OF THE REGATTAS OR MATCH RACES
is to force the opponents to violate the priority rights or overlaps rules, so incurring in a penalty (360° rotation on itself) to be paid before the race end.

ANOTHER SECRET is to try to maintain a cover tactics of the leeward opponent in order to blanket its wind and slow down their movements.

SIMULATION AND STRATEGY MAKE RACE THE WIND REALLY APPEALING
for the sailors, but also attractive towards the regattas' and America's Cup's world for the generic public loving the sea and the competition.
